Speakers

Philip Austin

Phil Austin is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Atmospheric Sciences Programme in the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at UBC. His research focusses on cloud-climate interactions, and he is also involved in teaching and learning development as part of OCESE (Open Source Computing in Earth Sciences Education) and the Minor in Data Science initiative.

Tomas Beuzen

Tomas Beuzen is a postdoctoral teaching and learning fellow with the Master of Data Science program (Vancouver option) at the University of British Columbia. In the Master of Data Science program Tom enjoys teaching programming (R and Python), data wrangling, visualisation and machine learning. While now a self-proclaimed data-scientist, Tom has a background in coastal engineering and the Earth sciences - which is where his passion for using data science to solve real-world problems originated.

Hayley Boyce

Hayley is an Education Specialist for the Master of Data Science program at the University of British Columbia. As an alumna of the program, she enjoys giving a student’s perspective for many of the Master of Data Science courses as well as continuing to broaden her teaching and data science skills. Hayley is currently working on building an interactive online course with UBC’s Extended Learning program.

Jeremy Buhler

Jeremy Buhler is a Data Librarian at the UBC Library Research Commons and responsible for UBC Library’s collection of open and licensed data. He works alongside specialists in GIS, digital scholarship, and research data management to provide access to data for teaching and research and to develop data skills workshops for UBC graduate students.

Marie-Hélène Burle

Evolutionary ecologist by training, Marie is a Research Computing Training Assistant at WestGrid and Compute Canada where she develops workshops and webinars on machine learning, Julia, Git, R, HPC, and Linux tools. She is also a Data/Software Carpentry instructor and an open source advocate.

Warren Code

Warren Code is the Associate Director for Skylight, the teaching and learning support unit of the Faculty of Science. Warren leads, advises and assists in planning, research/evaluation and management for a range of teaching and learning projects across the Science departments, including some data science initiatives. Warren is responsible for advising and professional development for department-based education specialists, evaluating impact on students and faculty, and connecting with people from UBC and other institutions interested in the accomplishments in teaching and learning within the Faculty of Science.

Mike Gelbart

Mike Gelbart is an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the UBC Department of Computer Science and an Option Co-Director for the Master of Data Science program. Mike received his PhD in machine learning, specifically hyperparameter optimization, in 2015. Since then, he has focussed on teaching data science and machine learning. Lindsey Heagy

Lindsey Heagy is a Postdoctoral Researcher at UC Berkeley where she works with members of the Jupyter team. She will be joining the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at UBC in July 2021 as an Assistant Professor in Data Science. Lindsey works on machine learning, numerical modelling, and inversion with geophysical data.

Varada Kolhatkar

Varada is an Assistant Professor of Teaching at UBC in the Department of Computer Science. She primarily teaches machine learning and artificial intelligence related courses in the Master of Data Science program. She received her Ph.D. in computational linguistics from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto. She enjoys teaching complex and relevant topics in an approachable way!

Melissa Lee

Melissa Lee is an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of Statistics at the University of British Columbia. Melissa teaches introductory statistics and data science courses. She strives to use evidence-based teaching practices, emphasizing student-centred learning.

Firas Moosvi

Joel Ostblom

Joel Ostblom is a PhD student in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto, where he uses computational and experimental approaches to better understand fundamental stem cell decisions. He will be starting as a Post-Doc for the UBC Master of Data Science program this fall.

Tiffany Timbers

Tiffany Timbers is an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of Statistics and a Co-Director for the Master of Data Science program (Vancouver Option) at the University of British Columbia. In these roles she teaches and develops curriculum around the responsible application of Data Science to solve real-world problems.

Patrick Walls

Patrick Walls is an Associate Professor of Teaching in the Department of Mathematics at the University of British Columbia. Patrick teaches mathematical computing with Python, SciPy and Jupyter, and calculus, differential equations and scientific computing for mechanical engineering.

Peifan Wu

Peifan Wu is a postdoctoral Research/Teaching Fellow in Vancouver School of Economics at the University of British Columbia. Peifan works on macroeconomics, industrial organization, as well as econometric methods. He is one of the instructors of QuantEcon DataScience which is a hybrid course of Data Science and Economics.
